The smoke alarms in each apartment are battery operated and should be checked twice each year. The best way to remember to do this is test them (by pressing the red test button) every time daylight saving starts or finishes.
The batteries usually have to be changed once a year.
If smoke occurs in your apartment open your balcony door to clear it (if advisable). Do not open your front door into the passageway.
The smoke alarms in the passages are connected to the fire brigade and may be set off by dust or smoke, automatically calling the brigade to attend. False alarm call-outs are chargeable. Many hundreds of dollars which may be on-charged to you.
